Where in the ocean is most life concentrated? ›
Sea life is concentrated in the sunlit waters near the surface, but most organic matter is far below, in deep waters and on the sea floor.Where do 90% of all marine creatures live? ›
The coastal zone makes up only 10% of the oceanic environment, but it contains 90% of all marine species. Coastal zones are the most nutrient-rich life zones of the oceans. Coastal zones can be divided up into several different life zones. One life zone that can be found in a coastal zone is an estuary. What zone does the majority of marine life live in? ›
The epipelagic zone stretches from the surface down to 200 m and is home to the greatest biodiversity in the sea, largely because of the availability of sunlight that enables photosynthetic organisms to thrive. Both marine plants and animals are found here.Where is the marine life located? ›
Our ocean, coasts, and estuaries are home to diverse living things. These organisms take many forms, from the tiniest single-celled plankton to the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale.Which ocean is rich in marine life? ›
So, based on global fisheries and the overall biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems, the Pacific Ocean wins for most marine life.Which part of the ocean is richer in life? ›
The neritic zone is rich in life because it is so close to the shore. It is rich in oxygen as well as nutrients and minerals, both from the ocean and from deposits from stream runoff. What ocean zone has no light? ›
The aphotic zone exists in depths below 1,000 meters. Sunlight does not penetrate to these depths and the zone is bathed in darkness. What percentage of Earth is marine life? ›
An estimated 50-80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface and the oceans contain 99% of the living space on the planet.Which ocean has the least marine life? ›
Scientists have discovered what may be the least inhabited place in the ocean. The seafloor sediments in the middle of the South Pacific have fewer living cells than anywhere else measured, a new study found.Where does 90% of marine life live and explain why? ›
Sunlit Zone: This is the top layer, nearest the surface.
It is also called the euphotic zone. Here there is enough light penetrating the water to support photosynthesis. Because photosynthesis occurs here, more than 90 percent of all marine life lives in the sunlit zone.
Why do 90% of marine creatures live in coastal waters? ›
Here sunlight reaches the sea floor, so plants can grow. These provide food for animals, protection from predators and a safe place for animals to breed and raise young.
The event could rival the “Great Dying” that occurred at the end of the Permian Period 250 million years ago, in which around 90 percent of ocean life is believed to have vanished. In this worst-case scenario, ocean temperatures would rise, resulting in less dissolved oxygen.Where do most marine mammals live? ›
Some have adapted to living their entire lives in the water, such as whales and dolphins, however, others can survive either on land or the sea, such as polar bears, seals, and otters. Marine mammals inhabit waters in all the world's oceans.
