Water utilities in southern Nevada have budgeted more than $1 billion for the coming fiscal year, more than $130 million more than budgeted for this year.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority plans to spend $1.03 billion for the fiscal year beginning July 1, according to the final budget approved by the board on Thursday.
That includes $379.4 million to fund major construction projects across the valley, a 40 percent increase in construction spending this year, said John Entsminger, the water agency's general manager.
The investments will partially fund several ongoing projects aimed at increasing the resilience of the valley's water system, includingHorizon horizontal projectThe total cost is expected to be $2.3 billion.
These are some of the key projects that the Water Board will invest in this year:
Water resistance in the South Valley
The Horizon Lateral project is part of the Department of Water's effort to increase the reliability and capacity of the water system in the South Las Vegas Valley. The project will also create backup infrastructure for existing water lines to make them more resilient in the event of an emergency or system disruption.
The agency expects to spend $18.2 million on the program in the next fiscal year.
Bell Tower Aqueduct
Water Authority will spend $44.7 million on constructionGarnet Valley water supply systemA series of pipelines transport water to the Apex Industrial Park in northeast Las Vegas and return wastewater from the site back down the valley where it can be treated and recycled back to Lake Mead.
Local officials have long viewed the Apex base as a key to diversifying Nevada's tourism economy, and the pipeline project should allow North Las Vegas to fully develop the industrial complex in the years to come.
Cleaning improvements in Las Vegas
Las Vegas Wash that enablesSouthern Nevada uses more than 300,000 acre-feet of the Colorado River annually, it will get some love next year with the budget approved.
Authorities will spend $19.3 million to stabilize the landslide by building erosion control structures and a new spillway to reduce the rate of erosion in the waterway.
